Barcelona

Unless you have an absolutely huge monitor you will have to expand the panoramic photos on this page and scroll back and forth to get the full effect.

Roy was lucky enough to spend a little time in Barcelona, Spain in February of 2008. This was a work assignment so the sightseeing was limited to a few hours, but there is a lot to see that begs another trip.

The work assignment was at the Fira Barcelona, or Barcelona Fair. The fair grounds are at the foot of Montjuic, a large hill covered with museums, schools, a fort and the site of the 1992 Olympic Games. On the side of Montjuic facing the Fira is this huge art museum.

On the facade of the museum and on the plaza in front of it are many statues.

The view from the art museum plaza to the Fira below. One man was playing a guitar for tips and someone was selling jewlery.

This artist used the museum plaza as a place to work on his art. Maybe he's hoping he will have something hanging inside one day.

The west side of the art museum faces a forested hill and the setting sun.

The Olympic site covers the crest of Montjuic with broad plazas, huge monuments and pools.

My friend George taking in the Olympic stadium. The raised bowl where the Olympic flame burned is at the upper left.

George had some fun with a memorial to a Korean athlete.

The sculpture garden was one of the few disappointments. Most of the pieces looked like scrap iron tacked together. Here are the better pieces.

At the top of Montjuic is an old fort. Here is the panoramic view from there overlooking all of Barcelona.

The view from the fort over the port and the Mediterranean Sea is pretty spectacular too.

The fort is made up of several layers of defense. This is the inner most structure, now a museum.

The outer walls are defended by several of these large guns.

The Sagrada Familia church was designed by Antoni Gaudi and is one of the most famous landmarks in Barcelona. Construction started in 1882 and is expected to finish in 2026, that's 144 years of work!

The architecture in Barcelona is spectacular, from the ultra modern to ancient Roman ruins.

A school near the Fira and a statue on the building across the street.

One of many towers on the buildings of the Fira.

Almost every block had little shops to buy fresh bread or other tasty treats.

Public transportation is very common with many buses and a subway. Getting around by bicycle is strongly encouraged by these bikes available at racks around the city.
