New Zealand

We had only one day in Auckland, New Zealand and we had just gotten off a 12 hour plane ride and it was raining. We had fun anyway taking the airport bus into town.

First stop was the Ferry Terminal, which was a nice old building, but it was full of restaurants and lawyers offices. The rest of the waterfront was a disappointment because it was full of shipping docks and construction sites.

The marina where the Americas Cup racers stayed and the Maritime Museum is was more interesting, though we didn't have time to go through the museum itself. The "Big Boat" that lost to San Diego Yacht Club's catamaran is on display outside. I say this boat in the San Diego harbor when it was here in 1988 for the race.

We had lunch overlooking the harbor and started a tradition of drinking tea with lots of milk for every meal and in between. Way too much tea.

Roy tries out a driftwood chair in front of one of the shops. It was amazingly comfortable, but way too heavy to drag home.

How is this for an entrance to a rest room? The Queen's Street shops held nothing back.

The major landmark in Auckland is the SkyTower that sticks way up above the rest of the city.

Chuck had to try out the glass floor where you can look straight down to the traffic on the streets hundreds of feet below you. The glass is stronger than the concrete floor that surrounds it, but it still feels scary!

While we were up there we enjoyed a light dinner and tried out the local brew, not that we needed anything to put us to sleep after being awake for most of two days and walking all around the city.
